It's Friday Cocktail Time!! Orange-Cranberry Delight Edition!

Hey Mommas!! Happy 1st Friday of 2017!! Hopefully your first week of the new year has been a great one for you!!  We were hit last night by winter storm Helena, and it wasn't supposed to be but just a dusting here in OKC.  However, we woke up to all white everything!! I think in all it was around 3-4 inches which I know is not much for some of you people up in the mountains.  But for us down here in the south, that's certainly enough for a snow day!!  School was cancelled for the kids and Mr. Mojito happened to be off work today already so we just had a blast playing in the snow and hiking in the woods near our new home.  We had some MarioKart tournaments, snuggled by the fire, and really just had a super fun Friday.  Fun Fridays always call for a fun cocktail.  So I whipped up this yummy one!! It's bright, crisp, all-in-all it's a delight! So that's exactly what I named it---Orange-Cranberry Delight!!  Mr. Mojito gave it two thumbs up!! It's easy to make and you probably already have all the ingredients!!  Give it a try and let me know what you think mommas!! See you next week!!

It's Friday Cocktail Time!! Happy New Year!!

Hey there Mommas!!! Oh, how I've missed you all.  It's been beyond crazy around here at the new Momma Mojito HQ!  Moving is a pain. A PAIN.  Seriously, head-spinning, utterly exhausting PAIN.  We have officially moved in but that sure doesn't mean we are settled in by any means.  We are surrounded by boxes.  We are slowly but surely getting things unpacked but it's certainly a process.

So let me tell you all a wild story.  When we were looking at the house a couple months ago, I heard a faint scratching sound behind the kids' bathroom wall.  Being that it's a brand new home and construction had just been completed, I wasn't overly alarmed.  Surely it's pretty normal that some little critters find their way in during construction right?  Well it sounded like a large animal scratching, so I assumed that it was an opossum or a raccoon maybe.  I explained all of this to the builder's superintendent who acted like it was no problem and he would set out some traps and poison and get to the bottom of it.  Okay great.  Problem solved, right?  Fast forward to our final walk-through on the home....everything looks great and in perfect condition.  I am truly pleased.  On further detailed inspection, I realize I can detect the very faintest odd and unfamiliar scent in the kids' bathroom and the hall closet that connects.  It is so faint that I am partly thinking it may just be in my head and I'm being just overly sensitive.  I chalk it all up to being new construction and surely there must be some strange smells that go along with it until the house gets settled.  So we sign and buy the home.  Happy and proud as we can be.  Well, we couldn't move in right away because the movers were not coming to pack up our old home until almost a week later.  Fast forward that week, I walk in to the house and of course go check out that smell that I was fairly certain I could smell but no one else could.  I open the hall closet and I am overcome with the worst and truly most bizarre smell ever.  I can't explain how strong the smell had become.  It was gag-inducingly terrible.  My suspicions have been correct....I knew there was something weird going on, and something in the back of my mind told me that the strange smell had been an animal.  And now I had concrete proof in the smell.  My husband tries to convince me that whatever it is has obviously died and the smell will go away.  Well, I become busy with trying to set up the home for the next week and I avoid that closet all the while wishing and hoping that the dreadful smell in my brand new home would just go away.  A week and a half goes by and I can no longer take it.  It's driving me crazy and I want it gone.  I email the warranty manager and I'm fairly certain he thought I was just some OCD woman who contacted him complaining about a strange smell.  Regardless, he and the builder's superintendent come over and agree there is a somewhat strange smell so they get to work on cutting into the wall in the closet.  As soon as they get a hole cut out, the smell becomes exponentially stronger.  They get a flashlight inside and see dark fur everywhere.  Then comes the possibility that maybe this animal is not dead yet. Things just keep getting better huh?  They send over a pest control person who immediately determines that the fur is that of a SKUNK.  Yep.  A skunk was living in my wall but the man was certain he had now died but given the location near the kids' bathroom tub, we couldn't see the skunk.  We had no clue where he was.  So at this point, I am thoroughly sickened by all of this.  Then the pest control proceeds to tell me that he won't be able to have it removed until the following week.  Are you kidding me?!?  Long story short, we ended up hiring someone else (a plumber of all people!) to do the job the same day.  After a lot of hunting and searching, they remove the little stinker from my wall and send another company out to sanitize and deodorize.  How is that for one of the craziest new home purchase stories you've ever heard??  Apparently critters of all shapes and sizes are curious about new homes being built.  Including skunks.  If I learned anything from all of this, it's to trust your gut--or in this case--your nose.  If something smells strange, it probably is something strange.  Lesson learned.

In other news, 2016 is just almost over.  Tomorrow is New Year's Eve.  I know for many people 2016 was a crappy year.  I can't say the same for myself.  It's been an interesting year for me.  Starting my own business, turning 30, moving to some actual civilization finally.  2016 has been a really good year actually.  There's a lot to look forward to in 2017 too.  Now that I'm finally getting settled into the new place, there is going to be lots of progression with Momma Mojito.  New adorable clothing, new accessories, new recipes, and a fresh prospective.  Thanks to all of you wonderful ladies for helping me get this fun project going and for following along with us as we push forward and keep on having fun!  I'm wishing you all health, happiness, prosperity, and delicious cocktails in 2017!! As it is our last Friday of 2016, I thought I would flash it back to my very first Friday Cocktail Time post which is of course undoubtedly the MOJITO!  Love to you all and a very happy new year!!

Momma Mojito's Original Mojito Recipe

Ingredients/Supplies:

  • 2 oz. Bacardi White Rum
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 oz. Simple Syrup (find it in the drink mixer section at the grocery store or make your own!)
  • 7-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Club Soda to taste
  • Crushed ice
  • Muddler
  • Lime wheel/extra mint to garnish

Directions:

In a highball glass, throw your mint leaves down at the bottom of the glass and pour the simple syrup on top of them.  Muddle those leaves lightly.   Not too much or you'll make your drink bitter.  Oh and for those of you who are unsure what muddling is -- it's basically just a fancy term for squishing.  Also, you don't have to own an actual muddler.  Feel free to use the underside of a spoon or any other tool with a somewhat flat side to it.  Now, fill the glass 3/4 of the way up with crushed ice.  Muddle some more and get it all good and packed in. Perfect.  Now add your rum. Bacardi white rum is the iconic rum for the mojito and it is just right in this drink so don't mess with a good thing.  Then add the lime juice.  Next, fill to the top with the club soda.  Give it all a slight stir and lastly, add those garnishes.  Hey--it tastes better if it looks pretty right? Okay final step: send those kids outside to play and prop yourself up in a lawn chair to watch! Now drink up Momma! You deserve it!

It's Friday Cocktail Time on a Monday!! BIRTHDAY edition!!

Hey Mommas!! Thanks for joining me for a super fun and special edition of Friday Cocktail Time!! So today, I turned 30 years old.  Whaaaattt?!? 30!!! That's right!! No longer in my twenties.  No longer considered young. I always thought I'd be a little sad to say goodbye to my twenties, but you know what?  I'm actually pretty excited!!  30 is not looking so bad after all.  In many ways, I was still figuring out myself in my twenties.  So many things happened in my twenties: I became a wife, a college graduate, and a momma to two little sweethearts.  But here in these last few months of my twenties, some pretty exciting things happened as well...I opened my business after years of contemplating AND we found out that we are packing up and moving up to Oklahoma City.  So my thirties aren't looking so bad either.  I'm super excited about my business, and I have big plans to continue growing it over the next couple of years.  Of course I'm very excited about this new adventure for my family in Oklahoma City as well.  But just as important as anything else, I'm really enjoying feeling completely confident and secure as a 30 year-old woman.  And I know that I'm lucky and blessed to be able to say that, but it's true.  It hasn't come easy.  There's been so many years of trials and tribulations along the way.  I wouldn't change a bit of it though because it's all what made me who I am today.  Of course every woman goes through times of self-doubt, but I'm more sure of myself and my relationships with the people I love more than ever.  And that's a great feeling.  I'm so proud of what my family and I have accomplished thus far, and I'm really hopeful that we'll continue giving it 110% and appreciate and love each other through it all.

Consequently, I know there are so many things I have yet to learn and experience in my 30's but I truly cannot wait. It's bound to be a fun journey.  I hope that I can remember in my 30's to slow down and enjoy the little things. That's something that I constantly need to remind myself.  I hope that I take the time to enjoy my kids' childhoods before I turn around at the end of my 30's and my daughter will be heading off to college.  That's a sad and scary thought, so I'm not going to go there today.  Time just flies by way too fast when you get to thinking about it.

For those women who are still in their 20's, if I have any words of wisdom-- it would be to love yourself.  Don't take that lightly.  Be proud of who you are through and through. Take time to figure out how you truly feel about everything and stay true to what you believe.  LOVE YOURSELF.  There is not much that can stand in the way of a woman who knows exactly who she is and exactly what she wants.  Take care of yourself. Take care of your spouse or significant other.  Take care of your kids.  But never ever forget to take care of yourself.  Do things that make you happy.  Work so hard that you can't see straight...then work some more.  Then when it's all finished--finally sit back, make yourself a cocktail, and enjoy all of that hard work.  You deserve it Momma. Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise.

Now.... it's time to get this party started!! Where's my party hat?? Who's up for cocktails?? Turn on some Bruno Mars because it's time to part-ay!!!! "Cause Uptown Funk you up, uptown funk you up, say whaaaat?!" This momma over here is more than ready to do some celebrating!! I'm dancin' already!! So here's the recipe to my very festive 30th birthday cocktail! I had a blast making this for my family this weekend as we celebrated!! Make it for your next birthday or for a friend's!! Everyone is bound to love it!! See you next time for another edition of Friday Cocktail Time!!

It's Friday Cocktail Time!! Spiked Cider Edition!!

Hey Mommas!! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hopefully, the food was great and you all had a good time with family and close friends.  We had a great time in deep East Texas with family and wonderful food.  The fall foliage in East Texas is just beautiful.  It really does rival some of the prettiest foliage in the country.  I know for so many of you mommas, Thanksgiving means a whole lot of work.  Lots of cooking.  Lots of cleaning.  Lots of hostessing.  Phew.  It's fun but exhausting by the end of it.  So I'm going to give you mommas a lovely warm Spiked Cider that you can warm up to after all that cooking and cleaning is finished up.

Spiked Cider is a breeze to make and you can make a whole big batch of it for a crowd.  It's easy to alter for what you have on hand.  All you need is some bottled apple cider, alcohol, spices, and sugar.  This recipe would work all fall and winter long.  I will definitely make another big batch of it for Christmas.  Not only is it delicious, but after just a short time of warming this cider in your crock-pot, your whole house will have this lovely apple and cinnamon smell to it that just smells like the holidays.  It's a win-win situation.  So make up a big batch this holiday weekend before reality hits on Monday.  See you girls next Friday for another edition of Friday Cocktail Time!!

MOMMA MOJITO'S SPIKED CIDER (for a crowd!)

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 quarts water
  • 5 orange spice tea bags
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 5 cups spiced apple cider
  • 2.5-2.75 cups of brandy or light rum (use 2.75 cups if you like it strong)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • Butter
  • Additional cinnamon sticks for serving

Directions:

In a tea kettle, bring to boil the water.  Once boiled, remove from heat and add tea bags.  Allow to steep for 5 minutes.  While you are waiting on the tea, pour in the brown sugar, apple cider, brandy or rum, 4 cinnamon sticks in a large crock-pot.  Once the tea is done steeping, pour it in with the rest of the ingredients in the crock-pot.  Give it all a stir.  Turn the crock-pot to low. Allow the flavors to blend and warm in the crock-pot for at least an hour.  To serve, add a very small pat of butter to a mug.  Ladle in the cider.  Serve with a cinnamon stick.  Now curl up next to the fire with a blanket and a good book.  Perfection.

It's Friday Cocktail Time!! Hot Toddy Edition!!

Hey Mommas!! Don't know which part of the country you call home, but down here in Oklahoma fall finally arrived.  We started the week with these beautiful, calm 70 degree days and we have ended the week with wild wind and Freeze Warnings.  Fall finally showed up and it seems like overnight.  The leaves have finally started to change.  Bursts of yellow, red, and bright orange have finally emerged.  With this sudden weather change, the wind has absolutely been whipping. It is blowing up all sorts of dust and dirt, and it's bound to get everybody coughing and hacking. I have been fighting off a cold all week, and with each day that goes by I seem to be succeeding less and less on that front.  Scratchy throat, coughing, sneezing, headache.  Yuck.  Enter the Hot Toddy.

The Hot Toddy is that classic cocktail that you used to hear doctors prescribe to patients for a sore throat--whiskey, lemon, honey.  Yep, all good ingredients.  While I'm normally a skeptic of silly remedies like that, this one has some validity....and not just because it contains alcohol! ;) Plus, you can variate this cocktail in so many ways to suit your tastes.  You can use it with just about any dark liquor -- whiskey, dark rum, brandy, etc.  You can throw in different spices, teas, or juices for a different flavor.  It's completely adaptable to your taste buds.  My version is pretty close to the classic Hot Toddy with the addition of some spices.  After having my Hot Toddy this afternoon, I can already feel the congestion in my chest breaking up and my scratchy throat finally feels soothed.  So the next time you feel a cold or a sore throat coming on, I would highly recommend this Hot Toddy recipe. After all, mommas don't get to take a day off for being sick. No one to replace us right? Mommas have to be on the job 24/7...sick or not.  So might as well do what you can to fight off being sick when you feel it coming on right?  Happy Friday Girls! Cheers and here's hoping you have a healthy and happy rest of your fall!!

MOMMA MOJITO'S CLASSIC HOT TODDY

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Brandy
  • 4-6 oz. Hot Water
  • 1/2 tbsp. Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 tbsp. Honey
  • Dash of Cinnamon (or 1 whole stick)
  • Dash of Cloves (or 2 whole)
  • Lemon Slices to garnish
  • Heat Tolerant Mug

Directions:

In your mug, drizzle in the honey along the bottom of the mug.  Add your dashes of cinnamon and cloves.  (If using the whole versions, hold off on adding these until after you add the hot water.)  Next, add the Brandy.  Now add your hot water.  (I like to use my tea kettle to heat the water--easier that way!)  Next, add your lemon juice.  If you're adding the whole cinnamon stick and the cloves, then add those now.  Give it a stir.  Garnish with as many lemon slices as you like. I like to throw a couple into the mug for some added lemon flavor.  Now let it all steep for about 3 minutes then enjoy.  Drink anytime you're feeling under the weather or you're just cold and need a nice warm cocktail! See you next Friday Mommas!!
